ESIM is a SIM card that is embedded in a mobile device. The SIM stores all the information that is required to identify and authenticate the mobile subscriber.
An eSIM will come in the form of an integrated SIM chip that cannot be removed from a device and is not required.
ESIM is sometimes called eUICC (embedded Universal Circuit Card). The information on the eSIM will be rewritable by the operators. Operators may be able to update your identification information online. So now you will not need a new SIM for the new operator.

What is eSIM?
An eSIM is an electronic SIM card. As the name suggests, it is used in place of a physical plastic SIM card, which cannot be removed.
The first time we brought this hardware to the Samsung Gear S2 3G was in 2016. However, it was the Apple Watch 3 that really brought eSIM technology into the limelight. eSIM can be found on Pixel 2 smartphones, although UK carriers do not currently support this technology for Google’s current flagships.
The idea behind eSIM on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is to enable the first dual-SIM iPhone. Instead of adding an extra slot for an additional Nano-SIM. You’ll be able to subscribe to the network using your phone just like you do on cellular-enabled iPads with an Apple SIM.
Why should you care? One of the advantages of eSIM is that it is slightly smaller than the size of a nano-SIM. This is what makes ultra-compact gadgets like watches so well suited, where there’s no room for a normal SIM.
An ESIM is non-removable and is embedded in the phone along with other internal components. You don’t have to remove it.
With such an embedded standard, the idea is that you can switch to a new operator without having to insert a specific SIM card. All this is done through software.
For example, the same Apple Watch 4 can be used on Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint in the US. In the UK, the Apple Watch 4 can be used on EE or Vodafone.
With eSIM, your phone has some new settings dedicated to your SIM card that allow you to switch between files and carriers and manage accounts.

ESIMs are currently more common in IoT devices, tablets and cars but whether they will gain acceptance in smartphones is still unknown. GSMA, an organization that represents the interests of mobile operators around the world, has announced a new SIM standard.
In addition to Samsung and Apple, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica (current O2 owner) and Vodafone are also on board.
The network data that a standard SIM card carries will be rewritable on future eSIM devices, so you just need to make a phone call or two to change operators.
There’s another benefit to be had while travelling. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time overseas, where roaming charges can be extortionate, switching to a local network will be much easier.
The other problem with physical SIM cards is that they are currently available in two or three sizes.

These benefits of eSIM cards are great, but there are also some disadvantages from the point of view of the users. If you are a user who changes their smartphone regularly or if you have multiple devices at home that have different SIM cards, this eSIM situation can complicate your life a bit more.
Every time you want to use a new device, you need to activate the SIM card through that device’s software. You cannot insert it into any other device by simply taking out the SIM as before.
If your phone’s battery is running out and you want to insert your SIM card into a friend’s phone to check something or make a call, this can also be a problem. With eSIMs, it won’t be fast or easy.

eSIM is only available from a few carriers. You’ll need either a carrier app or a QR code that you can scan. Again, the carrier will need to support eSIM.
In the UK, EE, O2 and Vodafone support eSIM, although Vodafone is currently only supporting it for Apple Watch Series 3, 4 or 5 Cellular.
In the US, only AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless support eSIM.
Away from traditional carriers, “global mobile network” Truphone has started selling eSIM data plans. These can be purchased through the ‘MyTruphone’ app. Truphone’s international plans operate in 80 countries, including Europe, the US and Australia.
This app was originally only available on iOS but is now available on Android for use with the Pixel 3, 3a and 4 (plus their XL versions). Truphone is currently offering 100MB of data completely free for new customers to try.
O2 recently launched eSIM on compatible Apple and Pixel phones. O2 says that customers just need to pop into your local store or get an eSIM pack or to download eSIM, call customer service.

With connected cars, eSIM will be equipped with in-vehicle services such as navigation, emergency/panic buttons, infotainment, automobile health, breakdown services, telematics and even diagnostics.
So many things will become easier such as making a reservation at a restaurant, paying for parking, or getting live traffic updates without taking out your smartphone, just plugging in your headset. It will be a truly smart and hands-free (voice-activated) car delivery experience.
How will eSIM work
If you have a physical and eSIM provisioning and are connected to two different networks, your iPhone will display both networks on the screen at the same time.
If the handset is on standby and both SIM and eSIM are provisioned, the customer will be able to receive calls and texts on both numbers. As you can see in the instructions below, you can then choose a “default” line that you call, use SMS, and one that uses iMessage and FaceTime. The second line is only for SMS and voice.
Alternatively, you can select Use Secondary for cellular data – if you are abroad and using local data eSIM.
You can store more than one eSIM on your iPhone, but you can only use one at a time.

- Settings > Go to Cellular.
- Tap on Add Cellular Plan.
- Use your iPhone to scan the QR code you provided – you’ll need to enter an activation code that may be asked for.

- Go to the App Store and download your carrier’s app.
- Use the app to purchase a cellular plan.

The Challenges of eSIMs

Before we can move on to eSIM, every major carrier has to agree that eSIMs are the future. Again, phone makers will have to follow suit. If you know how this industry works, things like this take time.
But it would start with one career, which would later grow to two, and so forth. As I mentioned earlier, Google’s Pixel 2 is the first smartphone to use eSIM, but that’s only if you’re using the phone on Project Fi. For all others, it still uses a traditional SIM.
And, as we mentioned earlier, switching phones can be a little more time-consuming. You can swap your SIM card in a matter of seconds, where it will take longer to convert to eSIM.
But for most people, I think eSIMs will be great—especially those who aren’t tech-savvy. You must be shocked how many people don’t know how to swap SIM cards. For those people, eSIMs are going to be awesome.

‘Slimmer’, in the smartphone world, generally, is associated with better, so expect the moment eSIM really hits the mainstream. Apple, as always, will take credit for being on the technology front – even if a rival can beat it in the market with eSIM phones, as Google did (on a limited scale) with the Pixel 2, which features SMS. The feature is connected to Google’s US ‘Project Fi’ network.
Why would ESIM help users with the thinnest smartphone ever?
Well, physical SIM cards are deceptively simple things. They’re mainly waste plastic, the actual SIM part being that little gold bar you see on one side of the card. This means that removing the SIM card will free up a fair amount of extra space inside the phone, allowing manufacturers to slim the device and replace it evenly.
It is not only the space occupied by the SIM itself but also the housing, reader and tray system that supports it. With space in modern smartphones and every millimetre count at an absolute premium, eSIM will help bring slimmer phones.
Beyond Smartphones and Calling
With eSIM, mobile operators are destined to go beyond just minimal support. The next generation of the Internet of Things will enhance connected devices, such as smart wearables, as well as connected ecosystems such as automobiles, and smart homes and offices.
The basic idea is to enable (no pun intended) connectivity of smart gadgets with the help of reprogrammable software and without worrying about the security and insertion of the smart SIM card.
