In 2000, the Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) formally approved the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) SI metric prefixes. For example, one GB is one billion bytes, and one kilobyte (KB) is one thousand bytes.
By the end of 1999, the IEC formally recommended that gibi, the metric equivalent of Giba, be replaced with the Giga prefix.
In the 21st century, the term GB is used according to context. Most computer networking companies use the SI prefix GB for gibibyte (GiB). When referring to the capacity of available RAM, the binary prefix is used. Thus, one GB is equal to 10243 bytes.
Software and filing systems often categorize file sizes using binary and SI unit combinations, such as GB or GiB.

The first-gigabyte capacity hard drive was IBM’s 3380, introduced in 1980. The IBM 3380 packaged two 1.26 GB hard disk assemblies in a refrigerator-sized cabinet. It ranged in price from $81,000 to $142,000, depending on the configuration.
When PCs were first introduced, HDDs were relatively small in terms of data capacity, and they were quite expensive. The IBM Personal Computer XT, released in 1983, was the first PC with an in-built hard drive as a standard feature. It originally came with a 10 megabyte (MB) or 20 MB hard drive. In 1991, the first 1 GB drives became available with a price tag of around $3,000.
From there, hard drive capacities grew rapidly. When Hitachi introduced the first 1 TB drives in 2007, the company noted that it took 35 years for HDDs to reach 1 GB, and 14 years to reach 500 GB. After this the first 1 TB drives appeared only two years later. Today, HDDs are available with up to 14 TB of storage, and SSDs can hold up to 100 TB of storage.
